How to use it
- Choose the start date and the end date. “Today” fills in the current date on your device.
- Turn on “Include times of day” if you need hours and minutes, or “Include the end date” to count both the first and the last day.
- Read the duration in years, months and days, the totals, and the number of Monday–Friday business days.
How it works
The breakdown in years, months and days works like counting on a calendar: whole months are counted first by moving the day number forward month by month, then the remaining days. When the start day does not exist in a later month, the last day of that month is used, so 31 January to 28 February 2025 is exactly 1 month and 31 January to 1 March 2025 is 1 month and 1 day.
Total days is the exact number of days between the dates. By default the end date is not counted, like a subtraction (1 May to 2 May is 1 day). Turn on “Include the end date” to count both the first and the last day (1 May to 2 May becomes 2 days). Weeks are total days divided by 7, with the leftover days shown.
Business days are Monday to Friday only. Public holidays, company closures and regional weekends (such as Friday–Saturday) are not taken into account, so subtract them yourself if they apply. With times of day, the result is exact to the minute, but times are treated as wall-clock times: a daylight-saving change between the two dates is ignored, which can make a real elapsed time differ by one hour.
Examples
Days until an event
From 22 October 2026 to 25 December 2026 is 64 days: 2 months and 3 days, or 9 weeks and 1 day. Of those days, 46 are Monday–Friday.
Counting leave days
Leave from Monday 2 November to Friday 13 November 2026 with “Include the end date” on gives 12 calendar days and 10 business days. Remove any public holidays in that period yourself.
Shift length with times
From 1 March 18:30 to 3 March 08:15 is 1 day, 13 hours and 45 minutes, or 37 hours and 45 minutes in total.
Frequently asked questions
Does the result include both the start and the end date?
Not by default: the result is end minus start, so from Monday to Tuesday is 1 day. Turn on “Include the end date” to count both days, which adds one day to every total.
Are public holidays excluded from business days?
No. Holidays differ by country, region and company, so only Saturdays and Sundays are excluded. Subtract the holidays that apply to you.
Why do two calculators give a different number of months?
Months have 28 to 31 days, so there is more than one convention. This tool counts a month when the same day number is reached, using the last day of shorter months. Total days is always unambiguous.
What happens if the end date is before the start date?
The dates are compared the other way round and the result is marked as negative, so you still see the size of the gap.
