How it works

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used format for photos. Its lossy compression keeps files small, but it has no transparency and every re-save loses a little detail.

WebP is a modern web format from Google that supports both lossy and lossless compression and transparency. It is usually smaller than JPG or PNG at similar quality.

WebP uses lossy compression: the quality setting trades file size against fine detail. 80–90% is a good default for photos. Converting re-encodes the image, which removes EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The browser decodes and re-encodes every image on your device, so the files never leave your computer or phone.

Will converting JPG to WebP reduce quality?

WebP uses lossy compression: the quality setting trades file size against fine detail. 80–90% is a good default for photos.

How many files can I convert at once?

It depends on your plan's image limits, shown on the Pricing page. A free account allows more files per batch than visiting without an account.
