How it works

PNG is a lossless format with full transparency support. It is ideal for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges, but photos are much larger than as JPG or WebP.

GIF supports simple animation and one transparent colour, but only 256 colours per frame, so photos look grainy.

GIF is lossless, so the result keeps every pixel of the decoded PNG image; it may be larger than the original. Converting re-encodes the image, which removes EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location.
