How to use it

  1. Type in the box or paste text from any document, email or web page.
  2. Read the counts below the box. They update as you type.
  3. Use “Copy counts” to paste the numbers into a report, or “Clear” to start again.

How it works

Words are counted with your browser's built-in language segmenter, which understands contractions such as “don't” and splits Chinese and Japanese text into words rather than counting every character. Characters are counted the way people see them, so an accented letter or an emoji with a skin tone counts as one character.

Sentences are detected from punctuation and language rules, so abbreviations like “e.g.” can occasionally be counted as a sentence break. Paragraphs are blocks of text separated by an empty line. Reading time assumes about 238 words per minute and speaking time about 150 words per minute, which are typical averages for adults reading silently and speaking at a presentation pace.

Examples

Checking an essay limit

An assignment asks for 500–700 words. Paste the essay, check the word count, and use the paragraph count to see whether one section is much longer than the others.

Timing a talk

A 750-word script shows a speaking time of about 5 minutes, which helps you trim a presentation before you rehearse it.

Frequently asked questions

Do numbers and hyphenated words count as words?

Numbers such as 2025 count as one word. Hyphenated words such as “well-known” are counted as two words, which matches most word processors.

Why does my word processor show a slightly different number?

Every program uses its own rules for punctuation, hyphens, URLs and footnotes. Differences of a few words on long documents are normal.

Is there a length limit?

There is no fixed limit. Very long texts (several hundred thousand words) may make counting slower on older phones.

Does it work for languages other than English?

Yes. Counting uses your browser's Unicode-aware segmenter, which supports most scripts, including Arabic, Hindi, Chinese and Japanese.
