How to use it

  1. Choose or drop one or more AVIF files.
  2. Adjust the options, such as quality or background colour, if shown.
  3. Convert, then download each JPG file or all of them as a ZIP.

How it works

AVIF is a newer format based on the AV1 video codec. It often produces the smallest files at a given quality and supports transparency, but encoding is slower and support in older software is limited.

JPG (JPEG) is the most widely used format for photos. Its lossy compression keeps files small, but it has no transparency and every re-save loses a little detail.

JPG does not support transparency, so transparent areas are filled with the background colour you choose (white by default). JPG uses lossy compression: the quality setting trades file size against fine detail. 80–90% is a good default for photos. Converting re-encodes the image, which removes EXIF metadata such as camera details and GPS location.

Frequently asked questions

Are my images uploaded?

No. The browser decodes and re-encodes every image on your device, so the files never leave your computer or phone.

Will converting AVIF to JPG reduce quality?

JPG uses lossy compression: the quality setting trades file size against fine detail. 80–90% is a good default for photos.

How many files can I convert at once?

It depends on your plan's image limits, shown on the Pricing page. A free account allows more files per batch than visiting without an account.
