How to use it
- Choose or drop an .xlsx file.
- Pick a sheet, or All sheets to get a ZIP file.
- Choose the delimiter and quoting options.
- Copy the CSV or download it.
How it works
The workbook is read with the exceljs library. For each cell the stored value is written: text, numbers, TRUE/FALSE, and dates as ISO 8601 (2024-01-15, with the time when there is one). Formulas give the result that Excel saved with the file; nothing is recalculated, so a file produced by a program that does not save results gives empty cells for formulas.
Number formats are not applied: a cell shown as 25 % is written as 0.25 and 1.234,50 € as 1234.5. Rich text becomes plain text, hyperlinks their visible text, and error values their code such as #N/A. In merged areas only the top-left cell carries the value. Trailing empty rows and columns are left out, every row has the same number of fields, and very hidden sheets are skipped.
Fields are quoted when they contain the delimiter, a double quote or a line break (or always, with Quote every field), and quotes inside are doubled, as RFC 4180 describes. Charts, images, comments and formatting are not part of CSV.
Examples
Import into another system
A price list in Excel is exported as a comma-separated file with CRLF line endings for an online shop's product import.
European Excel versions
Choose the semicolon delimiter and the byte order mark so the CSV opens correctly in Excel set to Turkish, German or French.
Frequently asked questions
Why do my percentages and currencies look different?
CSV stores values, not formatting. A cell displayed as 25 % holds 0.25 and that value is written. Format the column as text in Excel first if you need the displayed text.
Why are some formula cells empty?
The tool uses the result saved in the file. Files created by some programs contain formulas without saved results; open and save them in Excel or LibreOffice first.
Can I convert all sheets at once?
Yes. Choose All sheets (ZIP) and each sheet is saved as its own CSV file, named after the sheet.
Can I convert .xls files?
No. Only .xlsx and .xlsm are supported. Open the .xls file in Excel or LibreOffice and save it as an Excel Workbook (.xlsx).
Privacy
The workbook is read in your browser and the CSV files are created on your device. Nothing is uploaded, stored or included in analytics; only an anonymous event that the tool was used is counted.
