IFC to OBJPro

Choose an .ifc file to turn its building elements into a Wavefront OBJ for Blender, SketchUp, game engines and 3D viewers. The model is processed on your device.

Checking your plan…

How to use it

  1. Export your model as IFC (IFC2x3 or IFC4) from Revit, ArchiCAD, Tekla, Allplan or another BIM program.
  2. Choose the .ifc file and click Read model.
  3. Tick the IFC types you want, for example IfcWall, IfcSlab and IfcWindow.
  4. Download the OBJ with its MTL in a ZIP and import it into your 3D program.

How it works

The model is read by web-ifc, an open-source IFC engine (MPL-2.0) compiled to WebAssembly and served from this website. It parses the IFC file and triangulates the geometry of every element (extrusions, boolean cuts, breps and so on), including its placement in the building. The tool keeps the triangles of each element, counts elements per IFC type and writes a Wavefront OBJ: one object per element, coordinates in metres with Y up, and one MTL material per colour taken from the IFC surface styles (diffuse colour and transparency).

OBJ carries geometry and colours only: IFC properties, quantities, materials as data, storeys and relationships are not exported. Vertices are not shared between elements, so the OBJ is larger than a welded mesh. Reading happens in one step on the page's main thread, so the page pauses while a big model is processed. Memory is the main limit: a 100 MB IFC can need several gigabytes in the browser.

Examples

Visualisation in Blender

Export the architectural model from Revit as IFC, convert it with all building elements except spaces, and import the OBJ into Blender with its MTL colours for rendering.

Only the structure

Untick everything, then tick IfcColumn, IfcBeam, IfcSlab and IfcFooting to get an OBJ of the load-bearing structure for a presentation.

Frequently asked questions

Which IFC versions work?

IFC2x3 and IFC4 work best; IFC4x3 files are read where web-ifc supports them. IFCZIP and IFCXML must be converted to a plain .ifc first.

Why is this a Pro tool?

Building models are large and the conversion needs the higher file size limits of the Pro plan. The processing itself still happens entirely in your browser.

Are BIM properties included?

No. OBJ cannot store them. Element types and IDs are kept in the object names so you can match objects to the IFC.

The page froze. Is it broken?

Probably not. Large models take a while to triangulate, and the page cannot respond until it is done. If the tab crashes, the model needs more memory than the browser can use.

Privacy

The IFC file is processed in your browser with WebAssembly. It is not uploaded or stored. The IFC engine file is loaded from this website. Your plan status is checked to unlock the tool, and only an anonymous event that the tool was used is counted.
