Image Metadata Viewer and Remover

Open a photo to see what it reveals about the camera, the time it was taken and where. Then save a copy with all metadata removed.

Runs in your browser No sign-up

JPEG, PNG, WebP, HEIC, TIFF or AVIF, up to 25 MB. The file stays on your device.

How to use it

  1. Choose a photo or drop it onto the box.
  2. Check the summary: camera, lens, exposure, date and whether a GPS location is stored.
  3. Open "Show all fields" to see every EXIF, IPTC and XMP tag.
  4. Click "Remove metadata" and download the clean copy to share instead of the original.

How it works

Cameras and phones store metadata inside image files. EXIF holds the camera and lens model, exposure time, aperture, ISO, focal length, the date and time, and often the GPS position. IPTC and XMP hold captions, keywords, author and copyright, and editing software history. The metadata is read in your browser with the open-source exifr library.

A GPS position is shown in decimal degrees and in degrees, minutes and seconds. Six decimals correspond to roughly 10 cm, which can be precise enough to identify a home. Many social networks remove location data when you upload, but email, messaging apps and file sharing usually keep it.

To remove metadata, the image is redrawn on a canvas and encoded again. Nothing from the original file except the pixels is carried over, which also means the colour profile is dropped and wide-gamut photos are converted to sRGB. PNG output is lossless; JPEG and WebP output is recompressed at the quality you choose. HEIC and TIFF files can be inspected but not cleaned, because most browsers cannot decode them.

Examples

Phone photo before posting

A phone photo shows Location found: 41.008240, 28.978359, plus the phone model and the exact time. After Remove metadata, the clean copy reports 0 metadata fields.

Checking camera settings

A photo from a mirrorless camera shows 1/200 s · f/2.8, ISO 400, 50 mm and the lens name, useful when learning from your own or shared shots.

Screenshot

A PNG screenshot usually has no EXIF at all; the tool says no metadata was found, and a clean copy is identical in pixels.

Frequently asked questions

Does removing metadata reduce quality?

For PNG, no: it is saved losslessly. JPEG and WebP are recompressed, which loses a little quality; at 90–95% it is rarely visible.

Is the original file changed?

No. The tool creates a new file for you to download. The original on your device stays as it is.

Why can I see HEIC metadata but not remove it?

Reading metadata only needs the file's bytes, but removing it requires decoding the image, and most browsers other than Safari cannot decode HEIC.

Is the photo uploaded to read the metadata?

No. The file is read and processed by JavaScript in this page. Nothing is sent to a server.

Privacy

The image is read and re-encoded entirely in your browser. It is never uploaded, and the metadata and coordinates shown are not sent anywhere or stored.
