Rotate and Flip Image

Turn a sideways photo upright, mirror a selfie or straighten a tilted horizon, then download the result. Everything happens in your browser.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop an image (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF, up to 25 MB).
  2. Use the rotate and flip buttons, or drag the angle slider to straighten the image in half-degree steps.
  3. For angles that are not a multiple of 90°, choose transparent corners or a background colour.
  4. Check the preview and download the image in the format you need.

How it works

Rotating by 90°, 180° or 270° moves pixels exactly, so no detail is lost and the width and height simply swap for quarter turns. Flipping mirrors the image: horizontal flip swaps left and right (useful for selfies taken with a front camera), vertical flip swaps top and bottom. Flips are applied to the image before rotation.

Any other angle needs a larger canvas so the corners are not cut off. A 1000 × 600 image rotated by 10° needs about 1089 × 765 pixels; the extra area is transparent or filled with your background colour. The pixels are resampled during a free rotation, which softens the image very slightly. To remove the empty corners afterwards, use the image cropper.

When the image is opened, its EXIF orientation flag is applied, so a portrait photo from a phone appears upright to start with. The saved file contains no EXIF data, which means every program displays it the same way. JPEG has no transparency, so corners are always filled with the background colour when saving as JPEG.

Examples

Sideways phone photo

A photo that some program shows lying on its side is turned upright with Rotate right or Rotate left, and the saved copy looks the same everywhere because the orientation is stored in the pixels rather than in metadata.

Straightening a horizon

A landscape whose horizon dips by 2° is corrected with the slider at −2°. The new corners are filled with transparency or a colour; crop them off afterwards for a clean edge.

Mirrored text in a selfie

Text on a T-shirt that reads backwards in a front-camera selfie becomes readable after Flip horizontal.

Frequently asked questions

Does rotating reduce quality?

Quarter turns and flips move pixels without changing them. Lossy formats such as JPEG are encoded again when saving, so choose a high quality (90% or more) or PNG if you want to avoid any extra compression.

Why is the rotated image bigger than the original?

An image rotated by an angle that is not a multiple of 90° no longer fits in the original rectangle. The canvas grows to hold the whole image, and the new corners are transparent or filled with colour.

Why did my photo look rotated in some apps but not others?

Cameras often store photos unrotated and add an orientation flag in EXIF. Some programs ignore that flag. This tool applies the flag and saves the pixels in the correct orientation without the flag.

Which direction is a positive angle?

Positive angles rotate clockwise and negative angles counter-clockwise, as you see the image on screen.
