Image Resizer

Set a new width and height, or scale by a percentage, and download the resized image. Resizing happens in your browser; the file is not uploaded.

or drop it here. The file stays on your device.

How to use it

  1. Choose or drop an image (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF, up to 25 MB).
  2. Enter a width or height with the aspect ratio locked, choose a percentage, or click one of the common sizes.
  3. If the new shape differs from the original, choose whether to crop to fill, fit with padding or stretch.
  4. Choose an output format and quality, check the preview and download the resized image.

How it works

With the aspect ratio locked, changing the width recalculates the height (and the other way round) so the image is never distorted. Percentage mode scales both sides by the same amount, so 50% turns a 4000 × 3000 photo into 2000 × 1500.

When you set both sides to a shape that differs from the original, you decide what happens to the difference. Crop to fill covers the whole target and trims the edges equally from both sides around the centre, which is what most social networks do with a cover image. Fit with padding keeps the entire picture and adds bars in the background colour you choose. Stretch fills the target exactly but distorts the image.

Downscaling is done in several halving steps with the browser's high-quality smoothing, which keeps fine lines and text cleaner than a single large reduction. Enlarging is possible but cannot create detail that was not captured, so enlarged images look soft.

The output is re-encoded, so EXIF metadata such as camera data and location is not kept. JPEG has no transparency; transparent areas are filled with the background colour. The preset sizes are plain pixel dimensions; platforms change their recommended sizes from time to time, so check the current guidance of the site you are uploading to.

Examples

Link preview image

A 3000 × 2000 product photo resized to 1200 × 630 with Crop to fill keeps the centre of the photo and trims the top and bottom, giving the 1.91:1 shape most link previews use.

Square image without cropping

A tall 1080 × 1920 screenshot resized to 1080 × 1080 with Fit with padding is scaled to about 608 × 1080 and centred on a white or brand-coloured square.

Halving a photo for email

Percentage mode at 50% turns a 12-megapixel phone photo (4032 × 3024) into 2016 × 1512, roughly a quarter of the pixels, which also makes the file much smaller.

Frequently asked questions

Will resizing reduce quality?

Making an image smaller keeps it sharp; the tool uses step-by-step high-quality downscaling. Making it larger always looks softer, because the browser has to invent the missing pixels by interpolation.

What is the difference between crop to fill and fit with padding?

Crop to fill covers the whole new size and cuts off the parts that do not fit, centred. Fit with padding shows the whole image and fills the leftover space with a background colour.

Does resizing change the file format?

By default the original format is kept. GIF and BMP are saved as PNG because browsers cannot write those formats from a canvas. You can also choose PNG, JPEG or, when your browser supports them, WebP and AVIF.

Is there a maximum size?

Input files can be up to 25 MB and 50 megapixels. The output can be up to 16,384 px per side and 50 megapixels in total, which is within what current browsers can draw on a canvas. Older phones may run out of memory before that.
