How to use it

  1. Choose or drop an image (JPEG, PNG, WebP, GIF, BMP or AVIF, up to 25 MB).
  2. Pick an aspect ratio, or keep Free for any shape.
  3. Drag on the image to draw the selection, then move it or drag the handles. You can also type exact X, Y, width and height values.
  4. Choose the output format and download the cropped image.

How it works

The selection is stored in pixels of the original image, so the download is cut from the full-resolution picture even though the preview is scaled to fit your screen. The X and Y fields measure from the top-left corner.

Aspect presets keep the selection at an exact shape while you drag: 1:1 for profile pictures and square posts, 4:3 for most camera sensors and presentations, 3:2 for DSLR photos and 6 × 4 inch prints, 16:9 for video thumbnails and widescreen slides, and 9:16 for vertical stories and short videos. Because sizes are whole pixels, a ratio can be off by a fraction of a pixel.

The tool works with a mouse, touch screen or keyboard. Tab to the selection, then use the arrow keys to move it; hold Shift to move in 10-pixel steps and Alt to resize instead of move.

The cropped image is re-encoded in the format you choose. EXIF metadata, including the camera's orientation flag, is not copied; the orientation is applied to the pixels first so the result is upright. Animated GIFs are cropped from the first frame only.

Examples

Profile picture

Choose 1:1, drag the square over the face, and download. From a 4032 × 3024 photo the largest square is 3024 × 3024 px, which you can then shrink with the image resizer.

Exact region from a screenshot

To cut a 800 × 450 dialog that starts at 120, 260 in a screenshot, type X 120, Y 260, width 800 and height 450 and download as PNG to keep the text sharp.

Video thumbnail

Select 16:9 and frame the subject; a crop of 1920 × 1080 or larger from a high-resolution photo works well as a widescreen thumbnail.

Frequently asked questions

Does cropping reduce image quality?

Cropping keeps the original pixels of the selected area. With PNG output nothing else changes; with JPEG, WebP or AVIF the crop is compressed again at the quality you choose, so pick a high value such as 90% or more.

Can I crop on a phone?

Yes. Drag with one finger to draw or move the selection and use the corner handles to resize it. The numeric fields are handy for precise adjustments on small screens.

How do I crop to a circle?

This tool crops rectangles. For a round profile picture, crop to 1:1 here; most sites display square images as circles automatically.

Why is my photo rotated differently than in my gallery app?

It should not be: the tool reads the camera's orientation flag when it opens the image and shows the photo upright. If an image looks wrong, it may have an incorrect orientation flag; use the rotate and flip tool afterwards.
