How it works

Lorem ipsum is scrambled Latin used as placeholder text since the early days of typesetting. It is based on a passage from Cicero's “De finibus bonorum et malorum” (45 BC), but the words are altered and shuffled, so the text has no meaning. That is the point: readers look at the layout instead of reading the content, and the mix of short and long words looks like real text.

This generator picks words at random from a vocabulary of about 130 traditional lorem ipsum words. Sentences have 6 to 14 words, start with a capital letter, end with a full stop and sometimes contain a comma; paragraphs have 4 to 7 sentences. With the classic start on, the first sentence is “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.” (in word mode, the first words follow that phrase). Within a sentence, the same word never appears twice in a row.

You can generate up to 100 paragraphs, 500 sentences or 10,000 words at a time. The randomness comes from the browser's crypto.getRandomValues, which simply gives a new mix each time; nothing about the text needs to be secret. With the HTML option, each paragraph is wrapped in <p></p> so it can be pasted into a template directly.

Placeholder text should be replaced before a page goes live. Search engines treat lorem ipsum as low-quality content, and readers find it confusing on a published page.

Frequently asked questions

What does “Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet” mean?

It comes from Cicero's phrase “Neque porro quisquam est qui dolorem ipsum quia dolor sit amet…” (“nor is there anyone who loves pain itself because it is pain…”). In lorem ipsum the words are cut and rearranged, so the text no longer has a meaning.

Why use lorem ipsum instead of real text?

Placeholder text lets people judge a design's typography and layout without being distracted by the content. Use real or realistic text as soon as you can, because real headlines and paragraphs are often longer than expected.

Can I use this text commercially?

Yes. Lorem ipsum is based on a classical Latin text more than 2,000 years old and is not protected by copyright. It is meant for drafts, so remember to replace it before publishing.

Is the text different every time?

Yes. Words and sentence lengths are chosen at random each time you change a setting or click “Generate again”. Only the optional classic first sentence is always the same.
