Markdown Table Generator

Type into the grid or paste data from a spreadsheet, choose how each column is aligned, and copy a ready Markdown or HTML table.

Table editor. The first row is the header.

The first row is the header. Up to 200 rows and 20 columns.

Fill from CSV, TSV, spreadsheet or Markdown

Paste cells copied from Excel or Google Sheets (tab-separated), CSV with commas or semicolons, or an existing Markdown table. This replaces the grid.

Output

How to use it

  1. Type the header in the first row and the data below it, or open “Fill from CSV…” and paste cells from a spreadsheet.
  2. Add or remove rows and columns with the buttons.
  3. Set the alignment of each column with the menu above it.
  4. Choose Markdown or HTML and copy or download the table.

How it works

The Markdown output follows the table syntax of GitHub Flavored Markdown (GFM), which GitHub, GitLab, many documentation generators and most Markdown editors support. The first row becomes the header, followed by the delimiter row that sets alignment: :--- for left, :---: for center, ---: for right and --- for the default.

Cell content is escaped so it cannot break the table: a | inside a cell is written as \|, and a line break becomes <br>, because a GFM table row must stay on one line. Other Markdown in cells, such as **bold** or `code`, is kept and will be rendered by the Markdown viewer. With “Align columns with spaces”, every column is padded to the same width so the table is readable as plain text; characters such as Chinese, Japanese or Korean count as two columns wide. Rows with fewer cells are filled with empty cells.

The import accepts tab-separated text (what spreadsheets put on the clipboard), CSV with commas or semicolons including quoted fields with commas, quotes and line breaks, and existing Markdown tables, whose alignment row is read too.

The HTML output is a plain <table> with <thead> and <tbody>. Text is HTML-escaped (& < > "), line breaks become <br>, and alignment is set with inline text-align styles so it works without a stylesheet.

Examples

Spreadsheet to README

Select a range in Google Sheets, copy it, paste it into the import box and click “Fill table”. Set the price column to right-aligned and copy the Markdown into README.md.

Text with a pipe character

A cell containing “Unlimited | fair use” is written as Unlimited \| fair use, so GitHub shows the pipe instead of starting a new column.

Tidying an existing table

Paste a hand-written Markdown table with uneven spacing, click “Fill table”, and copy the result back with all columns lined up and the alignment kept.

Frequently asked questions

Can a cell contain a line break?

Not as a real line break, because each table row must be one line in Markdown. The generator writes <br> instead, which GitHub and most viewers display as a line break.

Why must there be a header row?

GFM tables always start with a header row followed by the alignment row. If you do not want visible headings, you can leave the header cells empty, but most viewers still draw the header line.

Can I merge cells?

No. Markdown tables do not support merged cells (colspan or rowspan). If you need them, use the HTML output and add colspan or rowspan attributes by hand.

Does the padding change how the table looks when rendered?

No. Extra spaces are ignored when the Markdown is rendered. Padding only makes the source easier to read and edit.
