How to use it
- Choose or drop a .docx file.
- Decide whether images should be embedded in the HTML.
- Check the result in the preview or look at the HTML code.
- Copy the code or download it as a complete .html file.
How it works
The converter reads the structure of the Word document with the open-source mammoth library and writes plain, semantic HTML: headings (h1–h6) from Word's heading styles, the Title style as h1 and Subtitle as h2, paragraphs, bold, italic, strikethrough, superscript and subscript, lists, tables, links, footnotes and endnotes. Quote styles become blockquote and code styles become pre and code.
The goal is clean markup for a website or CMS, not a visual copy. Fonts, colours, font sizes, spacing, alignment, columns, text boxes, page headers and footers, comments and tracked changes are not carried over. Merged table cells keep their content but simple tables work best. Documents that use custom styles instead of Word's built-in heading styles produce paragraphs instead of headings.
The preview is shown in a sandboxed frame that cannot run scripts or load anything from the internet. Old binary .doc files are not supported; save them as .docx first.
Examples
Publishing an article
A writer delivers a blog post as a .docx. Converting it gives h2 headings, paragraphs and links that paste cleanly into the CMS's HTML editor without leftover Word formatting.
Product sheet with a table
A specification table in Word becomes a plain HTML table with one cell per Word cell; you style it with your site's own CSS.
Frequently asked questions
Why are my headings plain paragraphs?
Headings are detected from Word's heading styles (Heading 1, Heading 2 …, Title, Subtitle). Text that was only made large and bold by hand has no heading style, so it becomes a normal paragraph. Apply the heading styles in Word and convert again.
Are fonts and colours kept?
No. The HTML deliberately contains no inline styles, so it takes on the look of the page where you use it.
What happens to images?
With Include images on, each picture is embedded in the HTML as a data: URI. With it off, images are left out. Charts, SmartArt and drawing shapes are usually not converted.
Can I convert an old .doc file?
No, only the .docx format is supported. Open the file in Word, LibreOffice or Google Docs and save or download it as .docx.
Privacy
The Word file is read and converted in your browser. The document, the HTML and any images are not uploaded, stored or included in analytics; only an anonymous event that the tool was used is counted.
