Scanners need strong contrast: dark bars on a light background, and a clear margin on both sides. Test-scan before printing in bulk. Retail EAN/UPC numbers must be issued by GS1 to be valid in shops.

How to use it

  1. Choose the barcode type you need, for example EAN-13 for a retail product or Code 128 for a label.
  2. Type the value. For EAN, UPC and ITF-14 you can leave out the last digit and the check digit is added.
  3. Adjust the bar width, height, margin, colours and whether the value is printed below.
  4. Download the barcode as SVG for print or as PNG at 1× to 4× size.

How it works

EAN-13, EAN-8, UPC-A and ITF-14 end with a GS1 check digit. Starting from the right, the digits are multiplied alternately by 3 and 1 and added up; the check digit is the number that brings the sum to the next multiple of 10. For 590123412345 the weighted sum is 83, so the check digit is 7 and the full code is 5901234123457. If you type all the digits, the last one is verified and a wrong check digit is reported with the correct one.

Code 128 encodes all 128 ASCII characters and is compact for mixed text; the drawing library picks the most efficient code set automatically. Code 39 supports upper-case letters, digits and a few symbols. MSI Plessey is digits only and is drawn here without a check digit. Pharmacode encodes a single number from 3 to 131070.

The barcode is drawn by the open-source JsBarcode library in your browser. SVG output is vector and stays sharp at any size; PNG output is rendered at the chosen multiple of the on-screen size. Keep the quiet zone (blank margin) on both sides, as scanners need it to find the start of the code.

Examples

Retail product (EAN-13)

Typing 590123412345 produces 5901234123457: the check digit 7 is calculated automatically.

Wrong check digit

Typing 5901234123458 shows an error: the check digit for these digits should be 7.

Warehouse label (Code 128)

A label value such as TIG-2026-0042 is encoded as Code 128 and downloaded as an SVG for the label printer.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make up an EAN-13 number for my product?

The barcode will scan, but shops and marketplaces require numbers licensed from GS1 for your company. Use made-up numbers only for internal or test purposes.

Should I use SVG or PNG?

SVG for printing and design software, because it stays sharp at any size. PNG for documents or websites that do not accept SVG; choose 3× or 4× for print.

What is the difference between UPC-A and EAN-13?

UPC-A has 12 digits and is used mainly in North America. An EAN-13 starting with 0 contains the same number, and modern scanners read both.

Why won't my scanner read the barcode?

Check the contrast (dark bars on light), keep a margin on both sides, and avoid scaling the bars unevenly. Very thin bars (width 1) may be too small for some printers.
