Time between two times

8:30 hours (8.50 decimal hours)

From 10:00 PM to 6:30 AM the next day (the end is earlier than the start, so it is treated as overnight).

Add and subtract durations

Write durations as 1:30, 1.5 or 1h 30m.

Total: 9:30 (9.50 decimal hours)

How to use it

  1. For a single shift, enter the start and end time. If the end is earlier than the start, the shift is counted as ending the next day.
  2. To add or subtract durations, type each one as 1:30, 1.5 or 1h 30m and choose add or subtract.
  3. For a timesheet, enter a start time, end time and break for each day; add as many rows as you need.
  4. Read the total in hours and minutes and in decimal hours, and optionally enter an hourly rate to estimate pay.

How it works

The duration between two clock times is end minus start. When the end time is earlier than the start, the calculator assumes the period crosses midnight and adds 24 hours, so 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours. Equal start and end times give 0. Periods longer than 24 hours are not supported in this mode; use the add durations section instead.

Decimal hours are hours plus minutes ÷ 60: 7:30 is 7.50 and 7:20 is 7.33. Payroll systems often use decimal hours, so both formats are shown. Pay is calculated from the exact time, then rounded to 2 decimals.

Times are entered in the 24-hour format your browser's time field produces and are shown back in your local format. Daylight saving changes during an overnight shift are not taken into account, because the tool works with clock times, not dates.

Examples

Night shift

22:00 to 06:30 is 8:30 hours, or 8.50 decimal hours.

Day with a break

09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8:00 hours.

Adding durations

7:45 + 2h 30m − 0:45 = 9:30 hours (9.50).

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours?

Divide the minutes by 60. 15 minutes is 0.25, 20 minutes is 0.33, 45 minutes is 0.75.

What if a shift is longer than 24 hours?

The start/end mode covers up to 24 hours because it only knows clock times. For longer periods, add the durations instead, for example 26:00.

Are breaks subtracted automatically?

Only the break minutes you enter in each timesheet row are subtracted. No legal break rules are applied.

Is the timesheet saved?

No. It is kept only while the page is open. Copy the totals before you close the page.
