YouTube Thumbnail Downloader

Paste a YouTube video link or an 11-character video ID. All thumbnail sizes are shown with their pixel dimensions, ready to open or download.

Runs in your browser No sign-up

Watch, youtu.be, Shorts, embed, live, m. and music.youtube.com links all work.

Image format

Thumbnails appear here after you paste a link. Nothing is loaded until then.

How to use it

  1. Copy the link of the video from the address bar or the Share button.
  2. Paste it into the field. The thumbnails load straight away.
  3. Choose JPG or WebP. JPG works everywhere; WebP files are usually smaller.
  4. Click Download for the size you want, or Open full size to view it in a new tab.

How it works

Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images stored on YouTube's image server (i.ytimg.com) under the video's 11-character ID. This tool reads the ID from the link you paste and shows the standard sizes: maxresdefault (1280 × 720), sddefault (640 × 480), hqdefault (480 × 360), mqdefault (320 × 180) and default (120 × 90). The same sizes are offered as WebP.

Not every size exists for every video. The 1280 × 720 version is only generated when the video was uploaded in at least 720p; for older or low-resolution videos YouTube returns a small grey placeholder instead, which the tool detects and marks as unavailable. The 640 × 480 and 480 × 360 versions are letterboxed with black bars above and below a 16:9 picture.

The Download button fetches the image directly from YouTube's server in your browser. If the browser blocks that cross-site download, the image opens in a new tab so you can save it from there. The pixel sizes shown are the real dimensions of the loaded image.

Examples

Standard watch link

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw&t=5s gives the ID jNQXAC9IVRw. Extra parameters such as t= or list= are ignored.

Shorts link

https://youtube.com/shorts/<ID> works the same way. Shorts thumbnails are still stored in the landscape sizes listed above.

Old low-resolution video

For a video uploaded in 480p, Maximum resolution is shown as unavailable; High quality (480 × 360) is then the largest real image.

Frequently asked questions

Why is the maximum resolution thumbnail missing?

YouTube only creates the 1280 × 720 thumbnail when the video was uploaded in high resolution. For other videos the server sends a 120 × 90 placeholder, and the tool marks that size as unavailable.

Can I get a custom thumbnail larger than 1280 × 720?

No. YouTube serves thumbnails at most at 1280 × 720 through these addresses, even if the creator uploaded a larger image.

Why did the image open in a new tab instead of downloading?

Some browsers or extensions block downloading a file from another website directly. The image is then opened so you can save it with right-click or long-press.

Am I allowed to use the thumbnail?

The thumbnail belongs to whoever made it. Using it to refer to the video, or reusing your own thumbnails, is normally fine; republishing someone else's thumbnail may need their permission.

Privacy

The video ID is read from the link in your browser. The thumbnails are loaded directly from YouTube's image server (i.ytimg.com), so YouTube sees those image requests; nothing is sent to TIG Tools.
