How to use it
- Choose an image from your device (JPG, PNG, WebP, AVIF, GIF or BMP).
- Pick Fill and crop, then drag or use the sliders to frame it, or Fit whole image with a background colour.
- Check the overlays: anything important must be inside the All devices box.
- Choose JPG or PNG, click Create banner, then download the file and upload it in YouTube Studio under Customisation, Branding.
How it works
YouTube recommends uploading channel art at 2560 × 1440 pixels, at least 2048 × 1152, with a file size of 6 MB or less. The full image is only seen on TVs. Other devices show a centred horizontal strip: up to 2560 × 423 on large desktop screens, about 1855 × 423 on tablets, and 1546 × 423 everywhere, which is why text and logos should stay inside that smallest box.
Fill and crop scales the image so it covers the whole banner and cuts off what does not fit; zoom and position decide which part remains. Fit whole image keeps the entire picture and fills the rest with a colour you choose. The preview is drawn at half size for speed; the downloaded file is rendered at the full 2560 × 1440 with high-quality scaling.
When JPG is chosen and the file would be larger than 6 MB, the quality is lowered in steps of 5% (not below 40%) until it fits, and you are told the final quality. PNG files of photos are often larger than 6 MB; the tool warns when that happens. Transparent areas become white in JPG. Metadata such as EXIF and location is not copied to the new file.
Examples
Phone photo, 4032 × 3024
Fill and crop cuts a 16:9 strip from the 4:3 photo. Drag up or down to choose which part stays, keeping the subject inside All devices.
Square logo
Use Fit whole image with your brand colour as background. The logo appears centred in the banner and stays inside the safe area.
Wide panorama
A 6000 × 1500 panorama is wider than 16:9, so Fill and crop uses its full height and you choose the horizontal position.
Frequently asked questions
What size should a YouTube banner be?
YouTube recommends 2560 × 1440 pixels with at least 2048 × 1152 and no more than 6 MB. This tool always exports 2560 × 1440.
Why is my text cut off on phones?
Phones show only the centred 1546 × 423 area. Turn on the All devices overlay and keep text and logos inside it.
Should I export JPG or PNG?
JPG for photos, because it stays well under 6 MB. PNG keeps flat graphics and text perfectly sharp but can exceed the limit for photographic images.
Is my image uploaded anywhere?
No. The image is decoded, drawn and encoded inside your browser; it is never sent to a server.
Privacy
Your image is processed entirely in your browser with the canvas API. It is not uploaded, and nothing about it is sent anywhere.
