How to use it
- Choose or drop a PDF file.
- Pick a format, such as “Page 1 of 10”, and one of six positions at the top or bottom of the page.
- Set the first number, the font size and colour, and whether the first page is skipped.
- Check the preview, select Add page numbers and download the PDF.
How it works
The numbers are drawn on top of each page with pdf-lib, about 10 mm from the page edges. The rest of the page is not changed, so text stays selectable. On pages that are stored rotated, the numbers are placed so they appear upright in the position you chose.
The total in formats such as “Page 3 of 12” is the last number used. If you skip the first page and start at 1, a 13-page document is numbered “Page 1 of 12” to “Page 12 of 12”, and the cover has no number. The first number can be any whole number, for example 5 if the PDF continues an earlier document.
Labels are written with the standard PDF font Helvetica when all characters are supported by it. For labels in other scripts the label is drawn with your system font and embedded as a small high-resolution image; it prints sharply but cannot be selected as text.
The tool does not detect existing page numbers, so check the preview to avoid covering printed numbers or footer text. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be numbered.
Examples
Thesis with a title page
With “Do not number the first page” and first number 1, the title page stays clean and the following pages read “Page 1 of 48” to “Page 48 of 48” in the bottom centre.
Appendix that continues a report
A 10-page appendix numbered from 31 in the bottom right with the format “{n}” shows 31 to 40, matching the main report.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add numbers only to some pages?
You can skip the first page. To number other parts separately, split the PDF, number the part you need and merge the files again.
Why are numbers on rotated pages in the right place?
The tool reads each page's rotation and converts the position, so the number appears where you chose when the page is viewed upright.
Can I remove the page numbers later?
Not with this tool. The numbers become part of the page content. Keep the original file if you may need a version without them.
Which font is used?
Helvetica, one of the standard PDF fonts, for Latin text. Labels with characters Helvetica cannot show are rendered with your device's system font as an image.
Privacy
The PDF is read and numbered in your browser. It is not uploaded, stored or included in analytics; only an anonymous event that the tool was used is counted.
