How to use it
- Choose or drop a PDF file.
- Pick how to split: by page ranges, every N pages, or every page on its own.
- For ranges, type pages such as 1-3, 5, 8-10 and decide whether they go into separate files or one file.
- Select Split PDF, then download the ZIP with all parts or each part on its own.
How it works
Splitting copies the chosen pages into new PDF files with the pdf-lib library. Pages are not converted to images, so text stays selectable and the quality does not change.
Ranges use the page numbers you see in a PDF viewer's page counter, starting at 1, not the numbers printed on the pages. A part like 8- means page 8 to the last page, and -3 means pages 1 to 3. Ranges may overlap; when you combine them into one PDF, pages appear in the order you typed and may repeat.
When there is more than one output file, the files are packed into an uncompressed ZIP archive. PDFs are already compressed internally, so zipping them again would barely save space. File names include the page numbers, padded with zeros so they sort correctly.
Bookmarks, document metadata and interactive form fields are not copied to the new files. Encrypted or password-protected PDFs cannot be split.
Examples
Separate chapters
For a 40-page report, the ranges 1-2, 3-15, 16-31, 32-40 create four PDFs named like report-pages-03-15.pdf, one per chapter.
Scanned stack of two-page forms
A 60-page scan of two-page forms split every 2 pages gives 30 PDFs, one per form, in a single ZIP download.
Only the signed pages
Typing 1, 7, 12 with “Put all ranges into one PDF” switched on produces a 3-page PDF with just those pages.
Frequently asked questions
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. The pages are copied, not re-rendered, so text, vector graphics and images are exactly as in the original.
Why is my page number “outside the document”?
The tool counts pages from 1 to the total shown under the file name, like a PDF viewer. Printed page numbers in the document (for example roman numerals in a preface) can differ.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
No. The tool cannot decrypt files. Open the PDF where you know the password, save an unprotected copy, and split that.
Why is the total size of the parts larger than the original?
Fonts and images shared by several pages are stored once in the original but must be included in every part that uses them.
Privacy
The PDF is read and split in your browser. It is not uploaded, stored or included in analytics; only an anonymous event that the tool was used is counted.
