Words are produced in English only (US-style short scale: a billion is 1,000,000,000). Other languages are not supported.

Up to 1,000,000,000,000,000 and 20 decimal places. Commas, spaces and underscores are ignored.

Style

one thousand two hundred thirty-four point five six

How to use it

  1. Type or paste a number. Thousands separators (commas, spaces) are ignored.
  2. Choose a style: plain words, cheque, spoken currency or ordinal.
  3. For cheque and currency styles, choose dollars, euros or pounds.
  4. Copy the result.

How it works

Numbers are written in the short scale used in modern English: thousand (10^3), million (10^6), billion (10^9), trillion (10^12) and quadrillion (10^15). Compound numbers from 21 to 99 are hyphenated (forty-two). By default there is no "and" after hundred, as in US usage; tick the option for the British form (one hundred and twenty, one thousand and five).

Decimals are read digit by digit after "point": 3.14 becomes three point one four. Trailing zeros after the point are dropped. Negative numbers start with "minus".

Cheque style rounds to whole cents and writes them as a fraction, for example One hundred twenty dollars and 50/100, which leaves no room to alter the amount. Currency style spells the cents too: one hundred twenty dollars and fifty cents. Ordinals turn the last word into its ordinal form: twenty-first, one hundredth.

The calculation uses exact integer arithmetic on the digits you type, so very large values and long decimals are not rounded. Only English is produced.

Examples

Cheque

1250.75 in cheque style: One thousand two hundred fifty dollars and 75/100.

Decimal and negative

-12.05 becomes minus twelve point zero five.

Ordinal

21 becomes twenty-first (21st); 100 becomes one hundredth (100th).

Frequently asked questions

Can it write numbers in other languages?

No. The output is English only. Word order, gender and grammar differ between languages, so other languages would need their own rules.

Should I write "and" in one hundred and twenty?

British English usually does, American English usually does not. Both are understood; use the option to switch.

How are cents rounded?

To the nearest cent, with half a cent rounded up: 10.005 becomes ten dollars and 01/100.

What is the largest number supported?

One quadrillion (1,000,000,000,000,000). Larger values return a clear error instead of an uncertain result.
