How to use it
- Choose an ancestry and whether the first name should sound feminine, masculine or either.
- Turn the family name (or, for orcs, the epithet) on or off.
- Optionally choose a first letter and first-name length.
- Lock names for your party or NPC list, generate again for more, and copy them.
How it works
Names are assembled from syllable tables written for this tool: a start syllable, zero to two middle syllables and an ending. Each ancestry has its own sounds, for example flowing vowels and endings like -iel or -ion for elves, hard consonants for dwarves and orcs, and short cosy sounds for halflings. Endings are grouped into feminine and masculine sounds; "Any" mixes both.
Family names join two word parts (Stone + helm, Clover + burrow, Star + song); dragonborn get clan names from invented syllables, orcs an epithet such as "the Patient", and tieflings a human-style family name. About one tiefling in four gets a word name such as Cinder or Solace. Choices use crypto.getRandomValues.
No names are copied from published books or games; the tables are only inspired by fantasy role-playing games. Because syllables are combined at random, a result may occasionally resemble an existing name. TIG Tools is not affiliated with or endorsed by Wizards of the Coast; "D&D" is used only to describe what the names are for.
Examples
Dwarf fighter
Ancestry Dwarf, sound Masculine, family name on: names such as "Brakgrim Coalbeard" or "Korok Anvilhelm".
Elf NPCs for a forest town
Ancestry Elf, sound Any, count 20: lock the ones you like and copy them into your session notes.
Short tiefling names
Ancestry Tiefling, length Short: names such as "Ezys" or "Hush" that are quick to say at the table.
Frequently asked questions
Are these official D&D names?
No. They are generated from syllable tables written for this tool and are not taken from any book. TIG Tools is not affiliated with Wizards of the Coast.
Can I use the names in my campaign or novel?
Yes, the tool claims no rights to its output. Because names are random combinations, search a name before using it commercially in case it matches an existing character.
What does the Sound option do?
It picks endings that usually sound feminine or masculine in that ancestry's style. Fantasy naming is flexible, so use whatever fits your character.
Why do orcs get "the …" instead of a surname?
Orc names here use an earned epithet, such as "the Unbroken", instead of a family name. Turn the option off to get only the first name.
