How to use it

  1. Choose or drop a PDF that contains tables.
  2. Choose one sheet per page or all pages on one sheet.
  3. Keep Store numbers as numbers on, and set the decimal separator if detection gets it wrong.
  4. Select Convert to Excel, check the preview and download the XLSX file.

How it works

The tool reads every text fragment and its position with pdf.js. Fragments on the same baseline form a row; a wide horizontal gap splits a row into cells. Column positions are found from the rows that have the most common number of cells, so a title or a note that runs across the table does not merge columns. Every cell is then placed in the column it overlaps. A large vertical gap becomes an empty row, which keeps separate tables apart.

With Store numbers as numbers, values such as 1,234.56, (450.00), -12 %, € 99 or 1.234,56 become numeric cells you can sum, with a number format that keeps their decimals. Values that would lose information stay text: numbers with leading zeros (IDs, postcodes), more than 15 digits (account numbers), and dates. Currency symbols are removed from numeric cells.

This works best for PDFs created by software (bank statements, invoices, exported reports). Scanned PDFs contain no text. Merged cells, multi-line cells and tables drawn without gaps are approximated, so check the result before you rely on it. The workbook is written with the open-source exceljs library.

Examples

Bank statement

A 3-page statement with Date, Description, Amount and Balance columns becomes three sheets. Amounts like -1.250,00 are detected as comma-decimal numbers, so you can sum them in Excel straight away.

Supplier price list

A 20-page price list converted to All pages on one sheet gives one long table you can filter and sort; repeated headers from each page appear as ordinary rows you can delete.

Frequently asked questions

Why are some values in the wrong column?

The PDF has no real table, only text at positions. When a cell is very wide, centred over several columns, or wraps onto two lines, its position can match a different column. Move those cells in Excel, or try the other worksheet option.

Why is a number stored as text?

Values with leading zeros, more than 15 digits, unusual separators or extra words are kept as text so nothing is lost. If all numbers are wrong, set the decimal separator manually.

Does it work with scanned PDFs?

No. Scanned pages are images without text. Read them with OCR first; the OCR Image to Text tool works on page images exported with PDF to JPG.

Are formatting, colours and borders kept?

No. The workbook contains the cell values with number formats only. Fonts, colours, borders and merged cells from the PDF are not transferred.
