How to use it

  1. Choose or drop the PDF you want to edit.
  2. Choose Editable text, Page images or Images and text.
  3. Optionally keep the original line breaks.
  4. Select Convert to Word and download the DOCX file.

How it works

In Editable text mode the tool reads every text fragment with its position, font size and font name using pdf.js. Fragments on the same baseline become lines; lines become paragraphs where the vertical spacing, font size or indentation changes, or where a list marker starts. Text noticeably larger than the most common size becomes a heading (levels 1 to 3). Bold and italic are taken from the font names, and the font family is passed on when it can be recognised. Each PDF page becomes a Word section with the same page size, so pages start where they started in the PDF.

This works well for letters, reports, contracts and other text documents. It is an approximation: tables are turned into tab-separated lines, text in several columns may be interleaved, text boxes and rotated text are flattened or skipped, and pictures are not copied in this mode. Scanned PDFs contain only images of text, so there is nothing to extract; use OCR instead.

Page images mode renders every page at 150 DPI and inserts it as a full-page picture. The result looks like the original but cannot be edited as text. The DOCX file is created with the open-source docx library. How large a PDF you can convert depends on your plan.

Examples

Editing a contract

A 6-page contract exported from another word processor converts into 6 Word pages with its numbered clauses as separate paragraphs and the section titles as headings, ready for tracked changes.

Keeping a designed brochure

A brochure with columns and photos converts poorly to editable text. Choose Page images to get a DOCX that looks exactly like the PDF, or Images and text to copy passages next to each page.

Frequently asked questions

Why does my Word file look different from the PDF?

A PDF only says where each piece of text is drawn; it does not contain paragraphs, tables or columns. The tool reconstructs them from positions and font sizes, which is reliable for plain documents but approximate for complex layouts. Use Page images for an exact look.

The Word file is empty. What happened?

The PDF is most likely a scan, so its pages are pictures without text. Convert the pages to JPG with PDF to JPG and use OCR Image to Text to read the text, or choose Page images here.

Are tables and images converted?

Not as Word tables or separate pictures. Table rows become lines with tabs between the cells, and pictures are left out in Editable text mode. For spreadsheet-like tables, PDF to Excel usually gives a better result.

Can I convert a password-protected PDF?

Not directly. Remove the password first with Unlock PDF, using the password you know, and convert the unlocked copy.
